Onions for domestic markets and regional exports
The Myanmar onion varieties have good storage qualities and are widely appreciated for their flavour. Farmers’ yields and income are rather low. Local market demand is consistently high throughout the year. There is also a potential demand for Myanma onions in some of the other ASEAN countries (e.g. Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand) during several months of the year. Production, storage and marketing improvements can help farmers and traders in the onion sector to increase their incomes.
What do we do?
Together with the local farmers and the members of the Myanmar Onion, Garlic and Culinary Crops Production & Exporting Association we have set up pilot activities in two different onion production regions: Magway and Myingyan.
In Magway region we focus mainly on improving the cultivation, storage and marketing practices. Demonstrations is farmers’ fields and field days are important aspects of these pilots. In Myingyan there is also an important element of testing of new onion cultivars.
After the first season we will also work on the development of Good Agricultural Practices so that regional exports will be facilitated.
East West Seeds conducted its first tomato pilot in the year 2017-2018. Read the results and their plans for the next year in this report.
The recommended practices outlined in the documents below were taught to participating tomato farmers:
